Lachen & Gurudongmar Lake
The Sacred Lake at 5,430m
Ground notes
Why Lachen & Gurudongmar Lake?
Gurudongmar Lake sits at 5,430m in the high pastures of North Sikkim, fifteen kilometres short of the Tibet border. It is blue in the way only altitude and cold can make water blue. Sacred to Sikhs, Buddhists and Hindus, it is said never to freeze in one corner because of a blessing by Guru Padmasambhava. You start pre-dawn from Lachen at 2,750m and return by mid-afternoon before the weather turns.
