Why Tsomgo Lake & Nathu La?
Tsomgo (Changu) Lake is a glacial oval at 3,780m, 38km east of Gangtok on the old Tibet trade road. Its deep blue water reflects the surrounding snow peaks and is sacred to the local Sikkimese. Twelve kilometres beyond, Nathu La pass at 4,310m was sealed for 44 years after 1962 — now open to Indian civilians on selected days, it is one of the few land crossings between India and Tibet that a traveller can legally stand at.
